Frequently Asked Questions

What is dial-up?
Anytime is our dial-up access product. You access the internet via your telephone line using a dial-up modem that's connected to your computer. You connect through AOL's specially designated Freephone access numbers, giving you unlimited access to AOL at any time, so there's no need to 'watch the clock' when you're online with AOL. How much does it cost?
All new subscribers to AOL dial-up are automatically provided with a one month free trial of AOL Anytime. Unless you change package after your free trial, you will be charged £15.99 per month for unlimited access to AOL and the internet. Back to top
What happens after my free trial?
Your free trial must be used within your first month online. If you do nothing at the end of your free trial, you will remain on AOL Anytime dial-up and be charged £15.99 for unlimited access to AOL and the internet. Alternatively, you can upgrade to one of our broadband products or chose an alternative dial-up price-plan. Existing AOL subscribers can view our alternative dial-up price-pans by accessing AOL Keyword: Pricing via the AOL software. Please note, these alternative price plans are only available to AOL subscribers who have already joined AOL through AOL Anytime dial-up. Back to top
What are the minimum computer requirements?
AOL 9.0 requires a Pentium-class computer with a speed of at least 166MHz running Microsoft Windows 98 or higher, 128MB of RAM, a monitor resolution of 800 x 600 or greater, 350MB of free disk space, a modem and a phone line. AOL 9.0 will try to install Internet Explorer 6 if this, or a later version, is not already present. Back to top
What is the difference between dial-up and broadband?
AOL Broadband allows you to access AOL at very high speeds - many times faster than a dial-up modem connection. AOL Broadband gives you the following benefits:
  • Superior sound and picture quality: With a faster connection you can get more enjoyment from the content readily available through AOL such as sport, film trailers and live music sessions
  • Fast downloads: Surf the Web, send emails and download files much quicker than ever before
  • Always on: AOL Broadband lets you stay online while you're making phone calls, without needing a second phone line
